Waiting for the young bearded vulture to take flight…
The Plates de la Daille via ferrata remains closed until the end of July to avoid disturbing a remarkable event: the imminent first flight of a young bearded vulture, chick of a pair nesting nearby.
This majestic bird, one of the largest in Europe with a wingspan of nearly 3 meters, had disappeared from the Alps before being successfully reintroduced in the 1990s.
Still rare and vulnerable today, it nests on remote cliffs and cannot tolerate human disturbance during the sensitive fledging period of the chick, known as a gypaet chick.
Val d’Isère is committed to protecting this iconic species. While you wait to climb freely again, take a moment to look up — you might just see the bearded vulture gliding silently above the valley….
The Plates de la Daille via ferrata is designed for experienced climbers seeking an aerial and thrilling route.
Suspended between 1795 m and 2155 m above sea level, it rises 360 meters through limestone cliffs overlooking the Val d’Isère valley. Exposure is constant, and spectacular views accompany every stage of the climb.
Plan for approximately 2h30 to 3h of ascent, followed by 30 to 45 minutes of descent on a comfortable trail.
♂️ Route description
The route starts gently with a flat path and a couloir crossing, then climbs an accessible grassy slope. Things get serious with a first vertical wall, an airy traverse, and a challenging overhang.
The ascent continues along a rocky pillar, interrupted by a brief grassy section, before climbing again along the ridge.
A downward and sideways section leads to a more open zone with a few metal rungs, followed by a second vertical wall and another impressive overhang. A final airy traverse brings you out of the rock face.
The last part is easier, with a gentle grassy slope leading to the 2155 m summit, where a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks awaits.
This complete and technical route requires proper gear, good physical fitness, and ideally the guidance of a professional to ensure safety.
A beautiful vertical adventure for those who love the mountains with a touch of adrenaline, in an exceptional alpine setting.
