Ouillette Lake is a stone’s throw from the Col de l’Iseran mountain pass, and visitors can expect a calm and soothing place with panoramic views of the Vanoise. This is a destination of choice for hikers but that being said, it remains a timeless spot, the perfect place to just embrace the moment or go for a picnic.

Ouillette Lake is also the ultimate place to come and relax. Lie on the grass or grab one of the wooden tables and enjoy a picnic facing the peaks, or evening drinks and nibbles as you watch the sunset, in a peaceful and spectacular setting. The children can play at the play area nearby, while the grown ups relax or read a good book in the great outdoors. The ideal place for some quality time as a family, as close to the sky as you can get.
As the sun goes down, blazing colours fill the sky and then darkness gradually takes over. Far from any light pollution, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and the stars seem to be within arm’s reach. Lie on the grass and simply embrace the silence as you look up at the spectacular starry sky. A moment where time stands still as you wonder at the peaceful display before you.
Lake Ouillette and its surroundings form a fragile high-altitude ecosystem that plays a vital role in the biodiversity of our mountains. The wetlands, ponds and small streams around the lake provide a habitat for many plant and animal species specially adapted to these unique environments.
To help preserve this delicate natural balance, swimming is strongly discouraged, including simply dipping your feet in the water. Even minor disturbances can affect water quality and the species that depend on it.
During your visit, please stay on marked paths, observe wildlife from a distance, avoid picking flowers, and take care to leave no trace of your passage. Together, we can help protect this unique natural heritage for future generations.
At an altitude of 2,500 m in the Solaise mountains, Ouillette Lake is a popular place for trout fishing, in an exceptional Alpine setting. It is easy to get there via the Col de l’Iseran pass or the free Solaise gondola lift, and every summer hundreds of rainbow trout are regularly reintroduced into the lake. Fishing is open to everyone and you won’t need a permit, there is just a fee to pay on-site. The site is managed by the Groupement Sportif de Pêche en Montagne association and you can expect an enjoyable fishing experience and even catch up to 5 kg of fish! Find out more.
Take off from the Solaise peak (at an elevation of around 2,500 m) and glide up over Solaise to admire Ouillette Lake, the village of Val d’Isère, Chevril Lake and Tignes dam, for a thrilling experience guaranteed! To book a flight in tandem click here!

Le Refuge de Solaise is perched at an altitude of 2,551 m at the former Solaise cable car station and is currently the highest hotel in the French Alps, transformed into a luxury establishment at the peak of Val d’Isère in 2019. The hotel boasts 16 rooms, a welcoming dormitory, 4 spacious apartments, a panoramic restaurant, an inviting bar and a high-end spa with 25-m pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. It can only be reached using the gondola lift (or via the road in summer), and guests are treated to a unique, immersive experience, to completely disconnect from reality, with incredible views, the sunrise over the peaks and modern comforts in the midst of the mountains.

The easiest way to get to Ouillette Lake in winter is by using the Solaise gondola lift! From the centre of the ski resort, it only takes a few minutes to reach the peak.
If you’re feeling brave and sporty, the other option is to go ski-touring! The marked-out Ecureuil trail is a fantastic 1.8-kilometre climb with 425 m elevation gain. Take a look at the route here.
Check out all the hikes here!
You can get to the peak easily thanks to the Solaise gondola lift, free-of-charge for pedestrians in the summer, and very close to the lake. Click here for the timetable.
Follow signs to the Col de l’Iseran, then go right along a track that leads to Solaise. This is an unpaved track so we recommend using a car with raised ground clearance.
In winter, Ouillette Lake is covered in snow, creating a pristine snowy scene that can only be reached using the Solaise ski lifts or by ski-touring. Once you arrive, you’ll enjoy this spectacular Alpine environment that is perfect for Nordic activities or for a well-deserved rest.
