Stay active without the heat Outdoor activities for every pace

Thanks to its altitude, Val d’Isère allows you to enjoy outdoor activities in much more comfortable temperatures.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle family walk or a more challenging hike in the heart of the Vanoise National Park, there’s something for everyone.

Mountain biking, electric mountain biking, trail running, golf or tennis at Manchet Sports Park, padel at the Central Sports Park, outdoor yoga or simply a peaceful walk beside the river, everyone can create their own perfect summer programme.

The mountains nature's answer to heatwaves

When temperatures soar in the lowlands, the mountains provide naturally cooler conditions thanks to their altitude. At 1,850 metres above sea level, the air is fresher, the nights are more comfortable, and the surrounding natural landscapes offer a completely different way to enjoy summer.

The mountains offer many advantages:

  • Cooler temperatures
  • Unspoilt natural surroundings
  • Peaceful places to relax
  • More enjoyable outdoor activities
  • A welcome feeling of freshness

If you’re wondering where to escape during a heatwave, the mountains are one of the best answers.

5 refreshing spots to cool off in Val d'Isère

Located on the Solaise plateau, Lake Ouillette is one of Val d’Isère’s must-visit summer destinations. Easily reached via the Solaise gondola, it offers the perfect setting for a refreshing break surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. Ideal for a gentle walk, a family picnic or simply relaxing beside the water.

  • The Chemin des Sources, a refreshing walk along the Isère river

Stretching between La Daille and Le Crêt, the Chemin des Sources is an easy walk suitable for everyone. Following the course of the Isère river, the route combines soothing flowing water, lush vegetation and shady sections that provide welcome relief during hot summer days.

  • Fornet waterfall, a breath of fresh mountain air

Accessible from the village of Le Fornet, this beautiful waterfall makes an ideal stop during a mountain walk. Fed by snowmelt and crystal-clear mountain streams, it offers a wonderfully refreshing spectacle that’s particularly enjoyable throughout the summer.

At 2,764 metres, the Col de l’Iseran is Europe’s highest paved mountain pass. Here, the drop in temperature is immediately noticeable. Even in the height of summer, conditions are often far cooler than in the valleys below. It’s also an excellent starting point for discovering breathtaking high mountain landscapes. Several hiking trails leave directly from the pass, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

  • Sassière lake, an alpine gem in the heart of a nature reserve

Nestled at 2,264 metres within the Grande Sassière National Nature Reserve, Lake Sassière is one of the most beautiful natural sites around Val d’Isère. Reached via a wide walking trail, the route crosses a magnificent alpine valley where a mountain stream winds through open meadows. Between the lake, the surrounding open landscapes and the high altitude, the area remains wonderfully pleasant even on the hottest summer days.

Stay safe during hot weather

1 Stay hydrated 💧

Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

2 Avoid strenuous exercise

Choose gentle activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.

3 Keep your surroundings cool

Close shutters, blinds and windows during the day. Open them at night or early in the morning when temperatures are lower.

4 Cool yourself down regularly

Take cool showers, splash water on your skin and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

5 Check on vulnerable or isolated people

A simple phone call or visit can make a real difference.

6 Avoid alcohol

Alcohol contributes to dehydration and increases the effects of heat.

7 Watch for warning signs

Unusual tiredness, headaches, dizziness, nausea or muscle cramps may be signs of heat-related illness. If someone becomes unwell, call the emergency services immediately.

8 In an emergency

Call the emergency services straight away.
