1. Skiing in April: the joy of spring skiingin the warm spring sunshine
As the temperature rises from March onwards, you can enjoy the sensation of skiing in the warmth of the sun, with greater freedom of movement without being encumbered by a heavy ski jacket.
At this time of year, our mountains benefit from deep snow cover and a maximum number of slopes are open, offering skiers of all levels a playground of snow that gradually softens under the mid-morning sun.
Also, there are fewer holidaymakers around in spring, which means the slopes are less crowded, offering stress-free skiing and less queueing at the lifts!
To make the most of spring skiing conditions, a few simple tips go a long way: In the morning, focus on north-facing slopes, where the snow remains firm and enjoyable for smooth, dynamic runs. As the day progresses and temperatures rise, head higher up the mountain and towards the Pisaillas Glacier, where snow quality stays excellent throughout the afternoon. This natural rhythm allows you to enjoy the best conditions all day long and experience the unique, relaxed feel of spring skiing in Val d’Isère.

With the village set at 1,850 metres and skiing reaching up to 3,230 metres on the Pisaillas Glacier, Val d’Isère benefits from exceptional altitude, making it one of the highest ski resorts in France. More than 60% of the Tignes–Val d’Isère ski area (formerly the Espace Killy) lies above 2,200 metres, ensuring reliable snow cover well into spring across over 300 km of slopes.
In addition to its natural snowfall, the ski area is equipped with an extensive snowmaking system, reinforcing snow coverage from early winter through to late season.
Val d’Isère’s proximity to the Italian border also allows it to benefit from the famous “Retour d’Est” weather phenomenon, which regularly brings heavy, highly localised snowfalls to the Haute Tarentaise, particularly on the upper slopes of the Pisaillas Glacier.
The result: deep snowpack, excellent snow quality and consistently open slopes through April. All these factors make Val d’Isère one of the best places for Easter skiing in France, offering perfect spring conditions, breathtaking alpine panoramas and skiing right through to the very end of the season.
