Safety on the Slopes Our action and commitment

In Val d’Isère, safety on the slopes is a priority shared by all concerned. We count on our professionals and visitors – families, children and skiers of all levels – to be vigilant and mindful of others, so that the mountains remain a pleasant place to be.
Through concrete awareness, prevention and information measures, we take action on a daily basis to encourage good practices for peace of mind on the slopes.

Test your knowledge with our “Safety on the Slopes” quiz to find out what kind of skier you are before getting on those skis!

Commited professionals across the resort

Mountain professionals play a key role in passing on good practices. Ski instructors, coaches and ski area professionals are fully committed to this approach.

Shared with ski schools, the Safety Ambassadors Charter highlights their role as on-the-ground reference figures. It promotes responsible skiing, positive and respectful communication, and constant attention to conditions, the environment and each skier’s level.

On January 28, 2026, this commitment was formalised with the official signing of the Safety and Well-being Ambassadors Charter on the slopes. Eight ski schools, including the Club des Sports, alongside Val d’Isère Tourism, Val d’Isère Téléphériques, the Pistes Department and the municipality, thus confirmed a collective commitment to ensuring a respectful, shared and safe skiing experience for all.

Providing clear information

Safety is also about providing information that is visible and accessible to all. So, where can you find our prevention information?

  • On the screens installed across the resort and at the lift stations.
  • At the Tourist Office, thanks to our qualified reception staff.
  • Wherever you purchase your lift pass.
  • On valdisere.com, on social media and in our newsletters.
  • From resort staff and local businesses.

The visual displays are designed to get messages across, in both French and English, that are straightforward, impactful and understood by all visitors.

4 videos to remember the right reflexes

To make slope safety even more concrete and accessible to everyone, we co-created a series of short video capsules with the French Ski School (ESF) of Val d’Isère. Each video features real-life situations and simple tips to remember, so you can fully enjoy the ski experience while respecting best practices on the mountain.

1️⃣ Speed & right of way – control your speed and respect the skier below you
2️⃣ Trajectories & overtaking – anticipate, cross and pass safely
3️⃣ Stops & signage – position yourself correctly and stay visible
4️⃣ In case of an accident – secure the area, alert rescue services, identify yourself

Yellow Pompon Initiative

On the slopes, a small sign can make a big difference.
The bright yellow pom-pom, created in Val d’Isère as part of the Pisteurs Juniors programme, is a positive marker that invites conversations about safety — simply, naturally, with a smile.

A visible symbol that sparks dialogue
Primary school children make and wear these pom-poms as a message of protection and awareness.
Wearing the pom-pom creates opportunities to connect: sharing essential safety reflexes, encouraging fair play and enhancing well-being on the slopes.
The colour yellow echoes the pisteurs’ cross — a clear, recognised and reassuring sign.
The goal: to help everyone become more aware of their behaviour and promote better sharing of space on the mountain.

Who can wear it?
Across the ski area, the pom-pom is worn by trained and committed professionals: ski instructors, piste patrol, lift operators, law enforcement officers, elected representatives and municipal teams — and more broadly, by anyone wishing to share and support responsible mountain behaviour.

A living initiative on the mountain
At lift departures, welcome points and throughout the ski area, the pom-pom becomes an open invitation to (re)share slope safety rules in the true Val d’Isère spirit: educational, confident and caring.
Dedicated safety events regularly extend the initiative, particularly during peak holiday periods.

Encouraging awareness from an early age

Because good habits are learned early, Val d’Isère is strengthening its efforts to raise awareness about slope safety among children and families.

For more than 15 years, the resort has been running the “Pisteurs Juniors” programme in partnership with its ski patrollers. Educational workshops are organised at the local primary school and with young members of the Sports Club, to teach — in a fun and age-appropriate way — the essential rules of safe behaviour on the ski area.

Offering guidance to skiers from the moment they arrive

Upon arrival, visitors can obtain information and guidance from the Tourist Office reception staff who are trained in keeping you informed about measures implemented at the resort.

When purchasing lift passes, you’ll be reminded of the essential rules by prevention messages that aim to encourage responsible behaviour, in a positive, educational manner.

"Safety" quiz A fun way to learn

Go a step further with our “Safety on the Slopes” quiz, suitable for all.

It’ll take just a few minutes to test your knowledge, find out what type of skier you are and make sure you’re aware of the good practices to be adopted on the slopes.

Essential rules to be aware of

Our preventive measures are based on simple, basic rules to be observed by all skiers.

A collective, long-term commitment

In Val d’Isère, safety on the slopes is part of a wider initiative for responsible practices and Flocon Vert certification, an approach supported by input from the Mountain Riders association and other committed operators.

Throughout the season, concrete measures are taken across the resort to spread awareness among families with children, get the resort’s professionals on board, provide educational tools, communicate through all available channels and organise educational slalom races and other amusing ways to take the good-practice message directly to the slopes.

This collective effort is also supported by a national safety-on-the-slopes day, organised on 28 January 2026 to remind skiers of the importance of appropriate behaviour and encourage them to be mindful of others and their surroundings.

In Val d’Isère, being a good skier is first and foremost about sharing the mountains safely.
