In winter Snow chains compulsory

To travel on a snow-covered section of road where a panel indicates “équipements spéciaux obligatoires”, it is compulsory to equip at least two drive wheels with snow chains. To do so, you must stop in one of the lay-bys designated for this purpose. On the road to Val d’Isère, once past Sainte-Foy Tarentaise. you’ll find one of these snow-chain stopping areas at ‘La Raie’.

Key information for your journey to Val d’Isère RÉCITA traffic management system

  • Follow the RN90 all the way to your destination.
  • Do not leave the route, even in case of slow traffic.
  • Respect traffic lights when they are activated.

→ During peak periods, this system helps keep traffic flowing to the resorts and ensures safety in sensitive areas.

Why this system?
In winter, traffic in the Tarentaise valley can be very heavy. The RÉCITA system regulates traffic on the RN90 to prevent congestion in high-risk areas (tunnels, cliffs) and ensure safer travel.

Why are some exits closed?
To prevent congestion on secondary roads, facilitate emergency services and reduce travel times for everyone.

Good to know
Traffic towards the resorts has increased by 40% on winter weekends since 1992.
