What to do during The autumn shoulder season September, October, November

Autumn is a magical time here in the heart of the mountains. The village empties out and nature takes over. The forests take on beautiful orange and yellow colours, the ibex come down from their high perches and peace and quiet settle in.

Open today:

What to do in the shoulder season in and around Val d’Isère

  • Do you know the Vanoise National Park? This jewel of Savoie, stretching across 1,979 km² between Maurienne and Tarentaise, offers hiking trails where you can spot incredible flora and fauna such as bearded vultures, eagles, ibex, chamois and marmots!
  • There are many hiking trails throughout the area, so you can find the one that best suits your preferences in terms of time and difficulty. Take the opportunity to discover the Village Perdu at the top of La Daille, a fun area where you can move from tree to tree along beautiful suspended walkways made from Alpine larch wood! Head up the Solaise side and take a stroll around Lac de l’Ouillette. At the end of the lake is an extraordinary panoramic view stretching from the village of Val d’Isère to Lake Chevril. A more strenuous hike takes you to the summit of Bellevarde, where you can enjoy a view overlooking the village of Val d’Isère with the magnificent Mont Blanc in the background, visible on a clear day.
  • For photography and video enthusiasts, autumn is the perfect time to capture beautiful colours. From the blue of the lakes to the yellow of the larch trees, you won’t know where to look.
  • The Col du Petit St Bernard pass to Italy is open until 22 September 2025 and the Col de l’Iseran pass in November (depending on snowfall), so take advantage of the first snowfalls to discover sublime landscapes cut off from the world. These passes are accessible by car or bicycle and are only open for a few months of the year!
  • Did you know that you can sleep in an unattended mountain refuge? During the shoulder season, the Fond des Fours refuge and the Prariond refuge remain open! After your stay, go to this platform to pay (which helps to ensure that our refuges are well maintained).

Thrill-seeking on your own! Bike Park and Via Ferrata

  • The bike park trails are still open until October (depending on weather conditions). Please note that there are no ski lifts at this time, the trails are accessible by electric mountain bike or, for the more courageous, by mountain bike using your own leg power! We therefore recommend that you exercise caution and respect the conditions at the time. To find out more, click here.
  • Climb to the very top of the cliff on one of the Via Ferrata routes! Don’t forget to bring your own safety equipment.

Thrill-seeking with a guide! Canyoning, guided walks, paragliding...

  • The Val-d’Isère Guide Office, founded in 1971, offers mountain excursions (hiking, climbing, canyoning, etc.) for all levels of ability throughout the year. The ideal way to discover nature in complete safety and a friendly atmosphere, whether for a day trip or a tailor-made experience.
  • Experience a thrilling descent on the white waters of the Isère! With family or friends, climb aboard a raft and let an experienced instructor guide you on a refreshing adventure combining adrenaline and laughter as you discover the mountain landscapes. Evolution 2 offers an unforgettable experience for thrill-seekers of all ages.
  • Fly over the peaks of Val d’Isère in a tandem paraglider, supervised by qualified instructors.A unique experience, open all year round, for anyone aged 6 and over!
