1. La Croix de Combefolle From La Daille in Savoie

This beautiful itinerary takes you peacefully along the banks of the Isère to the spectacular gorges of La Daille. The flat, well-maintained path offers a pleasant walk, but is not recommended for walkers with a fear of heights, as certain sections are rather exposed. The climb then continues in the cool shade of woodland, up to the top where you’ll find a picnic table, a viewpoint finder and an uninterrupted view of Mont Blanc. This is the ideal spot to take a break and enjoy the panorama. You’ll then cross mountain pastures and the picturesque, unspoilt wilderness of the lost valley, on your way back to the hamlet of La Daille where this beautiful loop itinerary ends. Starting point: hamlet of La Daille at the entrance to Val d’Isère.

2. Col et Lac de la Bailletta From Val-d'Isère - Savoie

A beautiful and challenging hike from the hamlet of Le Fornet, following a balcony trail from the village centre. The intense, 4-km climb covers an elevation gain of 925 metres, up to the pass. From there you’ll admire the Tsanteleina lake on one side of the mountain and, on the other, the Isère sources glacier and the Val d’Isère peaks. If you’re early and discreet enough, you’ll see the ibex that live on this ridge. On your way down you’ll enjoy the view over the blue-green lake of La Bailletta. As an added bonus, you can find out the names of the plants and flowers from the information panels at the start of this trail located in the Bailletta Variante Nature Reserve. For the return trip, you can walk down towards the lake of La Sassière, if you’ve planned ahead and left a car at the Saut dam car park. The Picheru descent to Val d’Isère is not recommended.

Try these experiences...

Check the weather forecast

The weather can change quickly in the mountains. If you’re planning a hike of several hours, be prepared and know what to expect before setting out. This way, you’ll be suitably equipped and take the right clothes, without overloading your rucksack with unnecessary items.

Items to take with you

In case you get peckish along the way, choose from this list of snacks to carry with you: dried fruit, cereal bars, biscuits (avoid chocolate which might melt!), walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, etc., not forgetting a bottle of water! (Allow 1 litre per person for every 2 hours.)

Top 5 essentials
  • factor 50 suncream
  • sunhat or other head protection
  • sunglasses
  • compass
  • personal first-aid kit
Know your limits

Before setting off for a hike of several hours, test your physical ability over shorter distances, gradually increasing the difficulty. Also, if your hiking shoes are brand new, ideally you should ‘break them in’ by starting with short walks.

Pace yourself

Don’t walk too fast! It is important that you find your own steady pace that you can sustain all day long. This way you’ll feel less tired, be able to cover more distance and adjust more easily to the change in altitude.

Dress smartly

Have you heard of the three-layer approach to clothing? The first layer, for comfort, is important as it is in direct contact with your skin. The second is for insulation, to help you retain body heat. This may be a fleece, for example. For the third layer, opt for garments that will protect you in the event of bad weather.
